The Triangle actually grabbed back Harnett and Lee Counties into the CSA. The CSA lost 1 county but added 2, and came out with a net +142,000.
Awesome news about Wilmington & Brunswick Co.
Good catch. I forgot they moved those in 2020.
So on the CSA front that should put each CSA around (based on 2022 Census estimates):
Charlotte: 3.333 million (gained the Hickory MSA + Marion/McDowell micro area)
Triangle: 2.286 million (gained Harnett and Lee, lost Granville)
Triad: 1.7 million (no change?)
Fayetteville: ~640k (lost Harnett and Lee to Triangle)
Asheville: ~496k (lost McDowell County to Charlotte)
Rocky Mount: 287k
Greenville: ~216k (Lenoir County removed from CSA)
New Bern: 190k
Wilmington MSA is now correctly indicating 453,722 based on the July 1, 2022 census numbers.
That is up 7.3% from the census in April 2020, some significant growth in a 27 month period.
With MSA's now defined, the growth numbers are a bit more meaningful. In eastern NC, Greenville, Jacksonville and Goldsboro's MSA's are just the county they are in. Goldsboro has seen no growth in the 27 month period, Jacksonville was at 1.3% and Greenville is at 1.9%.
Those numbers underscore how big Wilmington's number is at 7.3%.
You have to think the Wilmington-Myrtle Beach tie will not be dead forever though. Myrtle Beach MSA grew 9.1% over that 27 month period. Brunswick may be that tie to create a CSA in the future, especially if BOTH MSA's grow over 100K in this decade (which they are on pace to do). The extension of the Carolina Bays Parkway into Brunswick and the construction of the Hampstead Bypass will continue the connectivity of the MSA's.
By 2030, a CSA of Myrtle Beach and Wilmington would be close to 1 million in a 4 county region.

Might be missing something.
I think that the Triangle's new CSA is sitting at 2.33M as of July 2022.

I probably did something wrong. I got 2.287 million by:
2022 CSA estimate for Triangle: 2,144,608
Less Granville County -61,903
Plus Harnett County +138,832
Plus Lee County +65,476
Revised CSA Estimate: 2,287,013
First off, Carrboro > Charlotte … and that’s not even debatable.
Secondly, as I mentioned earlier, Charlotte has some land it will use because it will continue to absorb unincorporated areas up to the county line .
I am really interested in what makes Carrboro>Charlotte. Perhaps it might be debatable. Much of Charlotte annexing land has slowed down dramatically. Perhaps you are referring to something else when you refer to Charlotte absorbing unincorporated areas.
Not trying to be argumentative, as what makes a place better than another is subjective. I know people who would say Fayetteville>NYC. And I suppose it is if that is where their heart is

Lee county is a tricky one. I could see it in Fayetteville or Raleigh. I am glad Brunswick was added back to Wilmington. That move to Myrtle Beach was a head scratcher to me.
I’m shocked Granville was dropped from the Durham MSA and Triangle CSA. It seems to be growing more than ever, and poised for more development with the completion of I-885.

It is very perplexing. Commuting data from 2020 shows 27.6% of Granville residents commute to Wake, 21.4% to Durham, and only 20.6% work in the county. Clearly integrated with the Triangle region. It almost feels like an oversight by the OMB as Granville County isn't even considered a micropolitan statistical area and would just be considered not part of any core based statistical area... even Scotland County (population 34,227) is at least a micropolitan area. I wouldn't be surprised interns types these bulletins up and missed one.
