My husband and I are thinking of moving to NC in the near future and we are considering both Asheville and Winston-Salem. We currently have no children just alot of pets (but kids are in the future). We currently live in Tallahassee, FL and both work at FSU. I would love to get opinions about both cities from you guys here. Things like are jobs better to find in one or the other, is the weather better in one or the other, either have better housing possibilities, more things to do? Also, I know from visiting Asheville years ago that there are lakes there and I was wondering if Winston-Salem also has them? We really love the idea of having more seasons and less humidity then here. Plus Tally is kind of small and we definitely want a change.
Asheville is about 5-8 degrees cooler year-round than Winston-Salem. Winston-Salem has a much lower housing cost than Asheville. As far as jobs, it really depends on the field. If it's a job on campus, UNC-Asheville and Wake Forest are about the same size, but one is public and the other private.
County Populations (2006, from census.gov)
Leon, FL (Tallahassee): 245,625
Buncombe, NC (Asheville): 222,174
Forsyth, NC (W-S): 332,355
Winston-Salem is part of a larger metro area so that might better satisfy your need for a larger urban area. Asheville is like Tallahassee in that it's clearly the main hub in an area with few large towns.
