My husband and I are seriously considering moving from northeastern MD to the Elkin area of NC. We have visited the Asheville area and loved it. The only problem is we would like a large chunk of property, 10+ acres. We were looking outside Asheville and found the areas to be much more rural than we expected. We have a 7 yr old in 2nd grade so school systems are of great importance to us. We are just plain tired of the traffic (my husband's commute has gone from 50 minutes to well over an hour in just the last 5 years), the rat race hectic atmosphere, and we would like to be able to subsist on a single income allowing one of us to be home with our son. I have read and heard good things about Elkin City schools adn was wondering about the rest of the schools in the Surry County, Wilkes County, and Yadkin County areas. We have been talking with a real estate agent in Wilkeboro and have found several large tracts, 10-25 acres, of land in surrounding areas like State Road, Thurmond, and Jonesville. Can anyone give me some opinions about this area of NC? We want a much more laid back, relaxed type of life style.
