If I am in Charlotte 6 months out of the year and spend another 6 months at home in another state do I still have to get a NC drivers license and license plates?

I believe you only change your license/plates if NC will be your permanent residence.

I have a neighbor from Tennessee that has had Tennessee tags since I have known him (one year). I would not worry about it until caught and then plead ignorance. Just make sure that the tags are cheaper at the other place.

The plates/license requirements are for "new residents". If you are planning on maintaining your residence in another state then you shouldn't have to worry about it. Even if you do get pulled over, with an out of state address, license and plates, you most probably will be taken for a visitor - especially if you tell them you're a resident of that other state.

Now if you get pulled over enough that the cops get to know you, that might be a whole different story ~

Thank you all for the replies. Hey its too bad that we can't get a drivers license and plates that say "United States of America" so then we don't have to keep changing when we go state to state

I know someone who moved from NY to Raleigh and was "mistaken for a visitor" for about ten years. Everything was out of date, but no law officer bothered him because they assumed it was NY's problem.

That's insane! Insurance and DMV fees are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY cheaper than here in NY. Why on earth wouldn't you change? I HATE giving NY any money. When I'm in NC, I spend it like water....hmmmmmm....
