We are interested in relocating to a 55+ active adult community with all the bells and whistles of a Sun City. Golf is not required. It's NOT age restrictions we're attracted to.
- it's the built in amenities, social activities, clubs and easy ability to make new friends in a new locale.

We were very interested in Sun City Carolina Lakes until I found out that it's actually located in SOUTH Carolina. Which was very disappointing. We need to be legal residents of NC as I will need to enroll in the NC high risk pool health insurance plan.

We are open to any part of the state that has nearby decent lake or ocean fishing /boating. I've found a few 55+ communities but they seem small by comparison to SC. Suggestions?

You would think they would have build one by now. They are nice places I had friends in one in Phoenix.

Yep. We live in AZ now. Been here since the 1980's but I retired early, and cannot obtain health insurance here. No high risk pool. Hence, we have to move out of state and I was delighted to discover that NC had a viable option for health insurance for those marked with the dreaded pre existing condition crap.

Hi JK - Have you looked into Carolina Preserve in Cary, NC? It's a Del Webb community for 55+. Cary is a suburb just west of Raleigh.

My parents live in Carolina Preserve and they LOVE it. No golf (they don't play) but a beautiful clubhouse with tons of activities, indoor pool, gym, outdoor pool, tennis....they also have use at the facilities at Amberly, which is great in the summer because I can get my kids over there 1-2 times in the summer for some fun at that pool. There's a variety of home sizes too....my parents have a small ranch but some of their friends have some really big houses. Can't be more than 15 minutes from Jordan Lake for swimming/fishing.

Thank you for that suggestion. Can you tell me more about the nearby area to this community? How far is it to a selection of restaurants, grocery shopping, movie theaters, bars, etc? Some of the Del Webb communities in AZ are really out in the boonies!

How far are Raleigh and Durham? I know they are larger cities with good health care, ethnic restaurants, and other stuff to do.

Here's a resource you may have found already: North Carolina Active Adult Retirement Communities - NC 55+ Community

There are more 55+ places in central and western NC than I realized. One you might also look at is Four Seasons at Renaissance in Durham, by K. Hovnanian.

Nothing else in comparable to Sun City in Hilton Head, SC. I thinks it's one of the biggest in the country with over 20,000 people.

It's not out in the boonies, but truthfully there is not a lot right by it. One shopping center with the basics. My mom goes to Duke for a pressing health need, but for the rest of her stuff there's a Duke health care place right nearby (and all her Duke records are accessible from any office).

THey are closer to Durham than Raleigh. Movies are about 10 minutes away. THey go out to eat constantly.

Not sure you will find anything like Sun City in NC (at least not large scale). SC has much better tax breaks for retired folks so the biggies like to locate there. Good luck.

Dont' do it. North Carolina for retirees is a joke. The state will tax you to death. Things are not cheap like they are in Phoenix. Personally I think the cost of living along with other amenities will tax the hell out ya. The weather is terrible. You will sweat your a?? off in the deat heat of summer.
