Charlotte is between Belgrade and Indianapolis in the "High Sufficiency" category.
Raleigh is between Omaha and Reykjavik in the "Sufficiency" category.

I think this is good news for both areas. There is a discussion forum here in NC called Charlotte vs Raleigh: no holds barred, started by myself. I think both areas are rapidly transforming themselves into major international players despite all the haterisms on these two areas. I think in order for both areas to continue to accelerate it is important that their economic strengths not compete with each other. By this I mean, since Raleigh is big in R&D, and higher ed, Charlotte should focus on its finance and energy sectors. Their economies should really complement and encourage each others growth. An exampl of what I am saying is to look at the Texas Triangle of Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. They may have simliar industries but they do not really compete with each other as far as economic development. NC should follow suit so that Charlotte and Raleigh can continue to shine.

Because the square miliage of Atlanta is about half of Charlotte's. Atlanta has urban areas out side of the city...lots of Urban area outside of the city...

Well, the 2010 rankings are out, and it seems that both Raleigh and Charlotte moved up quite a bit from 3 years ago.
Charlotte being a "Gamma+" while Raleigh is in the "High Sufficiency" category.
