We're researching buying a few acres. Looking for a more conservative valued county with low taxes in NEPA. We looked at Wayne. But it looks like taxes have gone up quite a bit in the last few years. Anyone know about other counties we should consider? TIA

Taxes have gone up everywhere. Take a look at Pike County. There are still some bargains there.

We moved from Pike to Wayne because of the taxes. Like NJ said, taxes are going up everywhere.

The Poconos probably have the highest taxes in the area, and Luzerne county taxes have gone way up since the reassessment. Best bet is probably Lackawanna, Wyoming, or Susquehanna counties.

Wayne County has lower taxes than Pike County - but it's more the school district & township than the county. Parts of Pike County have much higher taxes than other parts.

Comparing to NJ & NY of course all of Wayne and Pike can beat 'em - all depends on your perspective.

It seems that in cities like Wilkes-Barre, where the home values are really low, that living there is a lot cheaper, but then again the home values only average around $65,000 or so, and the taxes would be around $1500. That's a saving grace over paying $3000-4000 but I wouldn't know where someone could get a decent tax rate on something worth 2-3 times that.

Hmmm. My house is worth almost double that, and I'm on a half acre...and my tax is about 1,000. Though my house is kind of small (kind of????) the taxes are pretty fair. Though in 97 when we bought the place I would swear our taxes were around $700 or so.
