pkrplr1,

Was the firewood, you just bought, oak, maple or something else?

I also wanted to warn buyers (users) of firewood to look for ant holes in the wood. Maple is one of the worst. If you make the mistake of bring in a frozen log and stacking it by your fireplace or wood burner; ants can wake and come out in the hundreds. Frozen, ant infested logs, are fine - if they go from outside to directly into the wood burner or hot fireplace.

It pays to inspect your firewood and try to keep it out of the house until you are ready to burn it. Almost all firewood also brings in spiders.

One other warning about firewood: never stack what we locally call “shad” or PA ironwood next to a warm wood burner. As this wood “seasons” you will think that you stepped in a dog dropping.

I made that mistake and after we cleaned the carpets; we discovered it was the wood! I had a little wood rack that I had built along side of my wood burner. That was before I decided it was better t leave wood outside until I was ready to use it.
