Hi everyone. My small family and I are looking to relocate out of NY. We are getting a bit discontented with what the city offers and what it needs to get out of us in return. It seems more of a disadvantage now. Plus we just had a baby and would prefer a place we can have a decent school and a small home of our own.

My question is this, we are both architects and would like to relocate in North Eastern PA. Which areas would be likely to offer jobs in our profession/industry? I suppose Philly would be an obvious location, but other than that can anybody suggest an alternative?

I suggest that you do a yellow pages search for architects starting in Scranton and then expanding the radius to say 50 or even 100 miles. Give each firm a call. See if any are hiring and then ask about how their businesses are doing. I don't mean to discourage you, but it seems to me that there are too many architects around for the available work.

Only rich people employ architects to design their homes. Most folks choose a design out of a plan book or buy a finished house from a developer. Most of the commercial and institutional design work goes to long established firms and there is fierce competition for the jobs that do become available.

If you really want to leave NYC, there are better opportunities down south or out west.
