I HAVE HEARD ALL THE STORIES ABOUT LAKE WALLENPAUPACK, BUT I HAVE SEEN NO PICTURES OF THIS TOWN UNDERNEATH THE WATER, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE CAN I FIND OLD PICTURES OF THE TOWN ITSELF......

Who said there was a town Under it ? In 1926 I doubt very much that it was a town, Maybe a few cabins or houses

It was the small village of Wilsonville. There was even a cemetery that had to be moved.

In order to create the lake, the dam was constructed on Wallenpaupack Creek at Wilsonville. The land of Wilsonville and the surrounding area in the valley was purchased by PPL from about 100 owners at about $20 an acre and all property was razed or moved. Seventeen miles of roads and telephone poles were rerouted, and one cemetery had to be relocated. The former town of Wilsonville now lies under the water near the dam.

Was it a town or not? Well, a lot of little "towns" from that time period do not really resemble much of what we think of as towns, just a collection of houses along a stretch of road (I think of Kimbles along the Lakcawaxen River...which used to have a post office long long ago...Rowland still survives, it has a branch of a telephone office and I think a post office.....Paupack...has a post office too...Indian Orchard, has a cemetery and a church....)

My Husband used to see a steeple of a church on his ride to school. No one has seen it in a long time now though.

Wilsonville, the historical society actually has a book on how the dam was built, etc. The story of the church steeple is interesting for one boater one year who was going so fast, hit the top (at the time the lake was low) and split the boat in half. Pick up the book, I highly recommend it.
