Hello everyone,

I've posted on here before when we were casually considering moving, but at this point, I think it is definitely going to happen within the next year. We are currently living in a small suburb outside of Hazleton. The school district has really gone downhill, and the area just isn't what it used to be. We have now narrowed down our choices to these 3 towns. Clark Summit is the last choice for my husband because it's furthest from his work. I am looking for a SAFE town with a good school district. A quaint town area where you can walk through town without dodging loitering riff raff would be a definite bonus. I don't like living in the middle of nowhere. I enjoy having nice, close-knit neighbors. Can anyone offer opinions on these towns? Are any of them seeing an increase in crime like most of NEPA seems to be seeing?

Moscow is a dead town. There is barley anything there ,

Moscow is nice, but its rural. Not a heck of a lot to walk to. Since Clarks Summit is too far, I would go with Olyphant. Has a fairly busy main st and is probably as walkable as any of the small towns in the valley. Home prices are very reasonable in Olyphant, while you will overpay in Clarks Summit, more for the upper crust Abington image than anything else.

The only thing that makes me a bit leery of Olyphant is how close it is to Scranton. Is it seeing any of the crime from that area? A town would be very nice, but safety is more important.

Olyphant is a safe town, but I wouldn't send my children to Mid Valley School District.

Yeah, because Scranton is a regular Detroit... Its only a few miles outside of Scranton, maybe 3 or 4 miles. Even most sections of Scranton are as safe as any town in the area, Scranton's problem areas are confined to a few areas.

Check the crime stats on city data, Scranton is not a high crime city, by a long shot. The crime index is 275.7 in Scranton, the US average is 319.1.

Hmmm...not having a good school district is a big problem. That's one big plus that Moscow does have. I'm actually not that familiar with how bad crime is in Scranton. I know Wilkes Barre and Hazleton are seeing a lot of problems with gang activity and that seems to be spreading out to the surrounding areas.

Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton are definitely much worse off in the crime department than Scranton, but even those cities are a far cry from Camden, NJ. I don't think Mid-Valley schools are horrible, but they have gotten some bad press regarding low test scores this past year. But I know a lot of people who graduated from MV and had no complaints, sounded like a typical NEPA school district. I know lawyers, doctors, etc, that went to MV schools, although obviously not recently. I do know that the schools are not dangerous or have crime issues.

Please bear in mind that no matter where you live, the criminals have cars and can easily get from where they are to where you are. But the crime, for the most part, consists of bank robberies, convenient store stick-ups, and copper pipe thefts. It isn't generally person on person crime, unless you are walking around advertising how much you have in your wallet. What the criminals want is money. And most of it is in the bank(s).

Good luck, wherever you go.
