I have had the pleasure to meet many of these refugees and have been to a few of their celebrations. Each and every one of them is concerned enough about their family to pick up and leave the only culture they have ever know to transplant to the other side of the world where they will have to relearn everything they know. Lazy freeloaders don't do that. If you are looking for problems with Scranton, there are plenty. The refugees aren't one of them.

So our tax dollars have to support another nations poor in a recession. These are the facts insane isnt it!

I thank God I still live in a nation willing to help those that truly have no where else to go! I only have one question regarding this, why resettle people in such an economically disadvantaged area? It almost seems cruel to me, these poor people have been through so much, but all the training and support in the world will not help if there are no jobs to be had.

I feel these people are very deserving of the help our nation has to offer, but it seems to me settling them in a chronically high area of unemployment is setting them up for failure.

Bloomin, I must spread some Reputation around before I give it to you again but you deserve props for your comments!

I'm not 100 percent sure of the answer to your question. What I'd imagine happened is that a Bhutanese family or several found this to be a good area and reached out to their community. I will try to find out for you though, because this is a good question and I too hope it doesn't hurt them in the future.

There are several groups formed within their community such as the Bhutanese Progressive Youth of Scranton and the Bhutanese Community of Scranton. If you look through their Facebook pages you can see how committed they are to learning English and assimilating to American culture while preserving their own. As a melting pot this is what America is all about!

This areas lack of jobs has been around a lot longer than the recession. Unless I am totally misinformed, low wages and lack of full time positions have been discussed at length for years on this very forum. I have not lived everywhere so I can only speak of the lack of full time and decent wage jobs here.

I was just questioning the wisdow of relocation to an area of chronic underemployment, high unemployment.

I used this thread to read up on the Bhutanese, such a heartbreaking thing that has been done to these people. God Bless them, I am always thankful for being lucky enough to have been born in the USA. When ever I read of plights like the Bhutanese, the first thought that comes to my mind, is there but for the grace of God go I.

Different refugees (based on country) are placed in different cities. While large metro areas are typically targeted, medium-sized or smaller cities that have faced population declines or stagnation are also a popular choice.
