I decided to finally get myself down to the Mine Map Repository and see what is beneath me. After seeing the poor lady in Parsons with all her problems I thought I should check to see if I should get Mine Subsidence insurance.

I had half hoped to see nothing but there it was, as plain as could be. About ten corridors of shafts run below. The man who showed me said "Let me put it this way, if I was buying a home and saw that the mines were 160 to 200 feet below I wouldn't bother to get insurance. If I saw that they were 50 feet I would get the maximum"

To all of you living north of Lehigh, I saw nothing, zilch mines so you are good to go.

Like the dude said, I will likely not bother as I think they are deep enough that the mass of dirt and rock is so immense that a small corridor would not catastrophically collaspe into an avalanche of sorts.

If anyone wants to check their property you can go the old Stegmaier building on Wilkes Barre Boulevard near Market Street. Suite 308

Great Info! I may have to take a run down there too.

Do you need to make an appointment?

I just wish they would post them online.

You can just walk in, no appointment needed and it was fast. He had my charts in less than five minutes. I told him when I saw the charts, "Now I understand why you haven't digitized them yet" and he laughed and said they were trying.

You have to see how huge they are. They are like 3' by 2' Posterboard binders and they have several sheets all with different information. The first sheet is a blueprint like map of the area and the second page is drawings of the shafts and how deep down they are. There were two or three other pages but I had found out what I wanted to know, from a glance I think they were other topographical information.

I was happy with what he told me so I didn't bother to investigate further but I may go back to request copies and I will check them out then.
