Hi everybody. As my username implies, I live in Nanticoke (moved into Nanticoke from NY in December 2007). I am a member of several web based organizations that like to participate in "Secret Santa" mailings. So the gift level is roughly $20-$30, and the person who's name I pulled doesn't travel much, but would love something "indicative of where I live". I thought something Amish might work well, but much of what I've found that's Amish actually comes from Indiana (go figure).

What is something that you would consider unique to North Eastern Pennsylvania? (and be nice, a lump of coal isn't really an option )

Actually.... I gave my Uncle a 400 lb. piece for Christmas once. He's mining artifact collector and it worked well with his collection, funny story too. It's Christmas day and we're all down in his cellar at the bar near this giant hunk of coal and the 4 year old Granddaughter comes down the stairs and spots the coal. Her eyes got as big as saucers and she says in the most serious tone "Whoever got that must have been really, really bad".... It was one of those things I guess you had to be there but everyone just about fell off their chairs laughing.

He could appreciate but I'm sure someone else wouldn't. You can get pieces that have been carved, they are hard to find though. The name escapes me at the moment but Kings College has entire "lectern thingy" in one of their churches where the priest stands that is carved from one solid piece of anthracite.... and it's huge and orante. I know I've seen pieces at Hallmark stores but nothing really exotic. It's peculiar art itself as you really have to know how to work with it and have the right piece of coal.

The end results can be quite spectacular with the right artist, it can be polished to mirror finish. Just make sure it's actually coal, I've seen a lot of stuff that is supposed to look like coal but not even close. It should have a very high glass like shine to it.

Last year for Christmas I found a baking mix made here in PA for pancakes, and found some maple syrup that was local - I think it was from Waymart or South Canaan. I don't remember where I got the pancake mix but I got the syrup in the Hawley IGA.

The Stourbridge Lion is unique to Northeast PA - perhaps you could find something in the Steamtown Musuem or Everhart Museum gift shop.

Steamtown National Historic Site - Bookstore (U.S. National Park Service)

The Everhart Museum of Natural History, Science & Art - About

Amish isn't really Northeast PA anyway.

A dozen Mrs. T's pierogies, and a 12-pack of Yuengling?

Mrs. T' are made in Shenandoah, and Yuengling is made in Pottsville.

A much better idea, why don't you donate $25 in the persons name to some deserving local charity. The charities can really use the assist, and whatever knick knack or artifact you sent may end up in the person's yard-sale/garage sale next spring.
