The tape player in my car sound system is sick, but I can't find a doctor for it in Fairfax County. After lots of googling, I came up with a list of audio electronics shops. But when I called I found the number disconnected or was told "we dont do that anymore."

If you know of a local shop that still fixes car audio, please advise. Many thanks.

Typically a tape player will slow down when the large elastic band that drives the tape is stretched and worn out. If you can pop it open you may be able to replace that band your self, if you can order a replacement part. Otherwise, with everything made in China is cheaper to replace than repair. I remember my first Alpine tape deck in the early '80s, it cost me $300 for the deck alone. Now you can get a OK deck for $100.

This looks like a pretty good deck for $100

I ended up going to Ebay, and picking up a radio for my car, which was a heck a lot easier than trying to repair it.
