I need some advice for my friend that wants to move close-in to DC (inside the beltway) at a budget price. I tried to talk him out of it, but he insists on living extremely close to DC without going over $1000-1100 per month for rent. I know him pretty well and he is willing to deal with just about anything within the "dangerous parts of VA" as he puts it in his laughing voice. Is there anyone that knows what areas may be the best for this price...which may be the best of the worst in Arlington or West Alexandria. So far I directed him to columbia pike, seminary rd, and possibly the landmark area. My friend also said that some buildings in Southern Towers are okay, but from the outside....ehhhhh. Can anyone help?

Why not suggest he pick up a roommate? That's what nearly everyone who wants what he wants does.

One more thing, he wants to get a one bedroom not a studio. Another one more thing, please no sarcastic responses like "Move to Woodbridge" or "Get a roommate". I have been giving him more than enough sarcasm myself.

tell him to get on CL and just search. There are quite a few places in that range and as long as he's willing to deal with less than appealing he can certainly find it. Look along Rt 1, Van Dorn Street area, Duke Street, etc. in Alexandria. Does that 1100 include utilities? Foxchase has places for 1050, but I don't think it includes utils.

Sorry about that CaliTerp, but it seems like we wrote messages at the same time. Also, I heard about Foxchase months ago when I was moving and completely forgot about the complex. Thanks for the quick responses so far.

You might want to tell your friend that for the most part living inside-the-Beltway on a "budget" price of 1100 and less doesn't really happen. At least not in areas close to the Metro or a major bus line. Especially if he/she isn't willing to have roommates and wants a 1 bedroom apartment instead of a studio. A lot of places in the Landmark area of Alexandria still go for around $1100 or more a month. Sure there might be a few exceptions but those are far from the norm. Although I'm sure you have already done this but tell your friend at his price range he can't afford (no pun intended) to be picky.

I wouldn't discount Huntington. It's technically outside the Beltway but has Metro access and is closer to Old Town than most places inside the Beltway.

Belle Haven Towers in Huntington would be convenient.

Further down Route 1/Richmond Highway, Mount Vernon Square offers more amenities than similar garden apartment complexes on or near that road, although the neighbors at most all of them can be like a box of chocolates.

Some cordial, some nuts, with the risk of a "spring surprise" in the mix.

Or NE DC?
