Over the last couple of days, a minute-long trumpet herald has started to sound near my building next to Rt. 50. I've heard it at 6pm, 11pm, and 6:30am. It's from outside my building and is definitely not somebody practicing (too loud, too perfect, sound source too diffuse). What is going on?!

Needless to say, I feel murderous toward whoever is responsible when I'm woken up.

Could it be coming from Ft. Myers? When we lived in Court House years ago, we could hear Ft. Myer events pretty clearly from our apartment.

LOL, years ago when I lived at Lake Anne there was an accountant who had an office there. Early in the morning you'd hear him walking around the plaza playing a violin. He was very talented, and he played mostly classical pieces. I rather liked it. but there was one neighbor who made an issue about it.

For a short time, it got a little heated. Mr. Violin threatened to take up the bagpipes... I forget how it all worked out, but as I recall the violin music continued for quite a long time. It just became part of the morning routine.

Ft. Myer would explain it, though I can't figure out from the website why the trumpeting started this week. Well, if it's the military, there's nothing I can do!

There is nothing wrong with confirming it's them and if it is asking them to tone it down a little. If they know it's disturbing residents they may be willing.

It is Fort Myer. Having lived near Fort Myer for the past ten years, and knowing what times they play the trumpet, I know that is what you are hearing. Why are you hearing now all of sudden is a mystery, since they do it every weekday. Maybe with the leaves off the trees you can hear more clearly where you are? Too me it's a reassuring sound knowing that the military are that close to my home.

Mystery solved: Ft. Myer just installed a new PA system. They'll try to turn it down. And I'll get some sleep!
