Ideally? As soon as you can afford it. Realistically? I crossed my fingers and skidded through life without insurance for about four years when I was in my 20s and got away with it. You're really taking a gamble once you're in your 30s, but in your 20s you're still fairly indestructible. Don't tempt fate by doing stupid things (driving dangerously, jumping into the Potomac, playing broomball on a patch of ice, etc) and your chances of not needing any serious medical care are fairly good, IMO.

I think basically when you get a full time job that offers health insurance - take it. You should be on your feet within the next year to year and a half I would think.

Yep, I agree with this thought. And, I didn't mean to turn this thread into a debate on whether every young adult should or shouldn't carry health insurance. It's a risk an individual needs to weigh themselves.

I think you've received a lot of good advice already. As far as the insurance topic, look at short term insurance. When I switched jobs, the company put you on contract status for the first 6 months and that meant no insurance. So I found some short term insurance at Health Insurance - Find Affordable Health Insurance Plans and Buy Medical Coverage Online. It was just basic emergency insurance, no prescription/dental/vision etc, in case I got seriously hurt. I ride a motorcycle so I thought it a good idea to have that just in case to supplement my basic motorcycle insurance. Forgot to mention it wasn't very expensive, around $300 for 6 months.

I've found short term health insurance to be around $100/month with the company I currently get my Auto insurance from. Thing is, the deductible is $2,000 so unless it's something life threatening the insurance will be useless right? Of course if something life threatening happens all plans are off so I'm going to look into emergency insurance instead.

Thank you for the response. Do you feel the same way about waiting to get Dental Insurance as well?

Yes, of course. Why would dental insurance be more vital than any other medical insurance? Insurance is a basic and important thing to have. Even so, if you have to choose between paying your electric bill or getting insurance, odds are you'll be smarter paying the electric bill. Sometimes a young person on an extremely tight budget has to skip a few basic things and hope for the best.

To change gears a little bit, I'm going to add a line for a gym membership. I searched the forum but didn't see a lot of info on prices. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just a place with basic machines and free weights. How much would this run me? I'm used to paying about $30/mo here so I really have no idea what to expect from places in NoVa.

You may luck out and find it for free if you happen to rent in an HOA. A lot of the communities here are HOA. For example, if you rent any place in Reston you automatically belong to their gyms.

That's about the median price I'd say. I was paying $35 for a basic 24 hour gym without a pool. The gyms with pools usually cost closer to $50. I called to cancel on month and they offered to reduce it to $15 so I kept it on, might be a strategy for you to try since a lot of people are pinching pennies these days. Don't ever pay a lump sum to get a better rate, you never know if the gym will fold.
