I have to agree that snow is where I tend to draw the line. I like to walk to work, but if it snows I usually drive (except maybe on the first day after a light snow, when it's pretty ).

when its still snowing or just snowed, walking tends to be easier than driving. Once stuff is cleared, walking is fine. The only time snow makes driving easier, is when the streets are cleared but sidewalks are not (esp when they plough the snow ONTO the sidewalks)

We have also, for recreation, walked the CCT in snow (quite a lot easier than biking in snow) and hiked at GFNP and SNP in snow. It was lovely.

I love running in the snow. It's like running in sand. Good cushion and burns more calories. I often run all through the winter (I wear all kinds of fancy high-tech thermal wear and "soft shell" that let out moisture and retain heat) and my neighbors look at me like I'm crazy. I love the cold and don't care for the heat. Most of my dogs are the same, since they are "northern" breeds. My very old Siberian Husky girl, though, doesn't care for the cold anymore. She likes to lie on her bed in the doggy fetal position with the tail tucked over her nose. But even she gets excited when she sees the snow coming down. The dogs were in high heaven two winters ago when all that snow fell (and yes, I am one of those crazy people who run the dogs on a treadmill in an a/c'd room on really hot days).

No, what I think is that the affleunt, educated, healthy Asian influx have raised the longevity numbers in Fairfax. I doubt that the massive influx of south/centr amer illegals were included in the study. It's really getting a bit outrageous. What really bothered me these past two years was the lack of homes flying the american flag on the fourth of July -- just a total disgrace. We're sending our best people in harm's way... and these folks in Fairfax can't fly old glory on the 4th -- it makes me really sad to think that a vet would drive down the pike on his/her way home and not see even one flag flying. Makes my heart sink to my stomach.

Thanks for your non-sensical right wing troll rant. Perhaps you missed the hundreds of thousands of local folks down on the mall celebrating the nation's independence. I'm also sure the number of flags displayed here on homes was comparable to any other metro area. Also, we have a huge military presence here so give me a break about our not supporting the troops. I'm at a loss to understand what this has to do with life expectancy anyway.

Oh, and just for your education, most of the folks here from Latin America are living here quite legally, through policies enacted and implemented by subversives like Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush:

Maybe our longevity is a side effect of working on government contracts? Government projects always go way past any dead-line.... and so do the workers.

I voted dem in every election since 88. But just look around and be open minded about what you see. Go to the 7-11 or home depot on a Sunday. I'm really not a right wing nut. Just a bit saddened by the lack of patriotism on the 4th. It truly was not like this 10-15 or even 5 years ago.

You mean like right after 9-11? That was not normal. This is...

Okay, could we go back to discussing health and fitness -- and longevity -- in this region?

I do agree, by the way, the stats for this region could be a bit skewed if indeed a large number of illegal aliens from Latin America were not counted. They probably were not. On the other hand, illegal aliens generally tend to be young and healthy. As a general rule, the old and the feeble don't make it through the arduous journey. So it's probably a wash statistically.

I asked this a few posts back and no one answered. How common are adult sports leagues in this area? Do many people belong to such leagues?

Probably hard to see the flags when your head is...oh, never mind.

Anyway, the trend in my Fairfax neighborhood is for folks to have small flags implanted in the ground near their driveways - and to keep them there well past the 4th (looking out the window now at the flag that my neighbor, whose family originally was from the Middle East, is displaying).
