I have lived in Arlington in the past. I transferred out of state and have an opportunity to go back and live in Reston. I am 34 and single. Now that the metro is coming to Reston is seems like an option. My job would be at the Town Center and I would also want to live there and walk to work. However, I don't want to be miserable and bored. I did not have a car in Arlington. I have one now. I would prefer to get rid of it.

To be within walking distance of one's job is an amenity that is highly prized and envied here. You should get by on the weekdays with the offerings that the Reston Town Center has. Arlington/Old Town Alex/DC will be easy enough to get to on the weekends; perhaps even more so when the Silver Line gets going.

I say keep your car unless you are okay with ordering your groceries online through Giant's Peapod service; you may also find it easier to meet dates who may not necessarily be convenient to the RTC.

Keep the car.

The advantages of having of no car tax or gas payments to worry about are a pittance by how much your friends will hate you for having to pick up and drop you off every time you want to do something where metro access is not available/convenient.

Zipcar hasn't gotten out that far yet. If you anticipate driving it only 1-2x a week, you could consider trading it in and getting a cheaper car but that might end up costing you in maintenance.

How often did you go out when you were in Arlington?

Also, IIRC, the Metro isn't that close to RTC. You could pick something off of North Shore Drive that is close to RTC, but a doable walk to Metro (plus it'd be cheaper than the new stuff in RTC proper.)

stpickrell is correct. The last stop in the first phase of the Silver Line is Wiehle Ave. The Reston Town Center stop is in phase two, which won't open until at least 2018. It would be a nice mile or so walk or bike ride down the W&OD trail from RTC to the Wiehle Ave. Metro.

reston town center is a great place, plenty shops, bars and restaurants. But not having a car, although doable limits your options. Harris Teeter is a 2-5 min drive from the town center, and you could walk to it but it would be a long walk especially carrying groceries.

VA has some of the lowest car insurance rates in the Union, keep the car, live in reston and enjoy

Welcome to Reston!

Keep the car, even if you use it sparingly.
