OK, when I moved here in the 70's there were some really good BBQ places that have since disappeared. I'm looking for authentic places that actually smoke their meats for a day or so and make their own sauces/rubs. Famous Dave's and Red, Hot & Blue don't count. Someone told me about Dixie Bones in Woodbridge, but I don't want to drive all the way there if it's not the real deal. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There is a place on Route 50, I think in Aldie?
Everytime I drive by there they have BBQ in a big smoker.
But, I've never eaten there - smells heavenly though.

Also, I think hispanic guys cook it, so I'm not sure how "real" that makes it, or how you define "real."

Have you tried Rocklands? They have a location in Arlington, on Washington Blvd.

Never been to this but have heard good things about it. It's in Ashburn. Welcome to Carolina Brothers Pit Barbeque

Welcome to NoVA, the land of bland food.

I've been to Dixie Bones because I live in Woodbridge and find the BBQ to be okay. They have very good potato salad and home baked pies, though.

Some of the best BBQ I ever had was out of a trailer (called Denny's) back when I lived in Clinton, MD. There used to be lots of roadside BBQ places in Southern Maryland but I haven't spent much time there so I don't know where the real deal is anymore.

The name escapes me but it's in a strip mall of businesses just off Rt 28 at the Dulles Expo exit. I finally made it there recently and this is the real deal. The smoked meat loaf is to die for as was the pulled pork. They do a heck of a lunch business during the week.
