Seems silly that the water company charges a $3 fee if you pay online versus mailing in a check or paying in person. The DMV charges less for online transactions. Is Fairfax Water stuck in the dark ages? I don't get it.

Fairfax Water uses a third party processor (Speedpay) for credit/debit payments. The $4 is charged by the processor as their fee for their service. Fairfax Water passes this fee on to you. Note that they actually discuss this right on their website: Fairfax Water

Ironically, the DMV does charge you $5 to do some things in person. They don't pass on credit/debit fees from online transactions to you because they want you to do them online to keep the crowds at the DMV smaller.

Just use your bank's online bill pay system. I have ING Direct and it was very easy to set up and it's free.

Pretty lame excuse on their website. If they're getting charged that much with the volume they do, they're getting ripped off. Would love to see how Speedpay got the contract. Perhaps it's owned by a relative of one of the Water Company officials? I don't believe Dominion Power or Washington Gas charge an online fee. Doesn't it cost just about as much to open envelopes and process checks?

You might want to sit down for this: BOTH companies charge a similar fee to pay by debit or credit card. This is not some kind of conspiracy it is standard practice - it's the same reason that a lot of small shops want a $10 minimum for you to use a credit card - these transactions are not free for them.

On the plus side they do both offer free direct debit.

Wash Gas, at least gives you the option to write an E-Check free of charge. I understand the fee if using a credit card, because the credit companies charge the business a fee just for them to accept it.
