This mothers day, I want to avoid all the "brunch" crowds and just take my wife and 2 y/o on a picnic with scenery and maybe some other stuff to do.
Are there any places within an hour of Fairfax that anyone would reccomend?
If it is nice weather, the beach could be an option. We also like wineries, but are not sure if any are having events or if they allow children.
Thank You!

Mt. Vernon would be fun.. but I'm sure there will be plenty of people if the weather is nice at any area park or the like.

Take a Frisbee, football, soccer ball, anything you can find. Book to read or a board game. I hope the weather is nice for you!

Barrel Oak Winery in Delaplane.

they ranked #1 family friendly winery in Wine Enthusiast magazine. Tons of picnic tables, tons of dogs, tons of children. they also have live music this Sunday.

Great Falls Park -- either the Maryland side or the Virginia side. Beautiful scenery, picnic friendly, and plenty for the whole family to do.

Cool fact about Bluemont Vineyard - on a reaaalllllly really clear day, you can see the Washington Monument. On just a normal clear day, you can see Tysons, which is pretty neat considering the distance. Certainly one of the better views of north eastern VA you're going to find

Prince William Forest national park.

Other really fun stuff to do could be a hike in the forest, bike ride, etc.

Two years old might be a little young to appreciate much of anything, but when my kids were only a little older than that, we used to go picnic at Glen Echo and ride the carousel. Still a kick for kids of all ages. Cue the calliope...
