Good morning! We live in a split level house and the middle level just has an opening in the wood floor going downstairs. There are walls on both sides, but the walls start about 3 feet back from the stairs and there are no posts or rails to which I could attach a baby gate for my grandson. I need to do something within a couple of days. I thought you could buy railing to attach into the wall and floor but I can't find anyone @ Lowes or Home Depot that understands what I am looking for. It's the top rail already attached to the little spirals and bottom rail that you just bolt to the wall on the back and to the floor on the bottom. At least then I could attach a gate. Does anyone know where i can find these pre made or come up with another solution before Friday? Thanks!

What about a puppy pen? They come in panels so you could fold it around to be the shape you need and give it stability.

Something like:

Petmate Exercise Pen in Black at PETCO

or

North States Pet Yard XT - Foldable Dog Pen Available Online from petco.com

We lived in the same style house when we fostered dogs and wanted to prevent them from getting to the (carpeted) lower level. Granted, doggy wasn't trying to pull itself up/stabilize itself on the barrier, so that might be a problem.

You can definitely buy top rail as well as pickets (balusters) at HD. But if you throw it together quickly, it might not look great, and it would be hard to remove if you nail it in.

I think the puppy pen above is an easier solution till you can hire a contractor to put in a permanent solution.

Here are some options if you are inclined to order online: Baby gates, stair gate, safety gate, child gate, baby fence

I was just wondering if he might be able to push the gate panels askew and still fall down the stairs. What do you all think? He's 19 months old and walking and climbing.

He'll only fall once! Kids do learn pretty fast if something hurts! Not that you want him to fall...but it WILL only happen once! Just keep an eye on him, till he's more stable!!

Ha! Yes, but I don't want it to happen on my watch! I guess I'll just corral him in to the LR/DR with baby gates as usual. I'm having a family get together Saturday and didn't want everyone to have to climb over the gates I normally use. If not for this ghastly staircase, he could have the run of the whole level.

This would not be reassuring to me. One fall down a flight of stairs is one too many for a toddler.

Try pet stores or DrsFosterSmith.com - pet supply catalog that has all sorts of contraptions - you can express deliver it

Or try googling - childproofing - NOVA even has services that will come to your home and childproof your entire house
