We are visiting and would like to go somewhere fun for a day trip that is not more than 2-3 hour drive. 1 to 2 hour drive would be perfect but if it's worth the drive please let me know.

We were thinking about maybe somewhere in West Va but not sure where would be a great place to visit for the day. I see advertising signs for West Va all the time and this is why I mention it.

Another idea was Williamsburg. We have not gone there so we have no idea if it's worth it.

I really have no idea where the perfect place to bring the family that is not so far that the drive itself takes the energy out of the day.

Please help me with some really fun ideas.

Why would you want to leave NoVA? Everything's right here.

We have been to DC to all the museums. Where would you recommend close by?

What sort of fun are you looking for? History and small town charms, rides/theme parks, nature hikes? Ages of kid(s) you want to keep entertained? Budget constraints?

Harpers Ferry/Charles Town is always good. There are a lot of options there - history, outdoors, gambling...

Mount Vernon Estate, Cameron Run (water) Park, and Old Town Alexandria. You can take a river cruise from the Old Town waterfront.

We like small town charms, maybe theme park. Nature hikes are always fun. My mother is 60 something, my wife and I 30 something, our son is 6 months in his stroller. We don't want to spend more than $50.

Just some great ideas that are fun and well worth the trip.

If you want someplace with abundant natural beauty for a hike, that's close by, I would suggest Skyline National Park, where you can traverse a portion of Skyline Drive. You can enter at Front Royal, and drive as far as you want, though I don't think you'd want to cover 100+ miles.

Charlottesville is also a nice place to visit, if you want to explore a different place. You could go to Monticello, Ash Lawn, or Montpelier, as well as walk the town. It's slightly closer than Williamsburg, and should not be as overrun with tourists as Williamsburg can be, which is fine, but if it's a super hot day, you might want to rush through the town.

I'd give the edge to the Harper's Ferry rec. History, charm, andit will probably be a little cooler up in the mountains, as well as a pretty drive. There's also the horse races up at Charlestown that's in the same general area, so you could watch the race card and

Can you please tell me exactly what places to go to in Harper's Ferry and how we should plan it out our day?
