Scary pictures, sullyguy!
I think they are the cicadas that are flying around me. I have seen the cicada killers digging holes in the dirt by the sidewalk--they really make huge mounds of dirt! Good to know the cicadas don't sting, but they have an intimidating demeanor!

They also leave behind some pretty scary looking "ghosts" sticking to things after they molt.

The exoskeletons! I love that word. Hate the cicadas -- my little pup didn't care for the one that was writhing on the ground, either, especially when the insect started to bzzzz at her when she got her nose too close! -- but love that term for the shedded layer.

Anybody read whether these are 13-years-underground or 17-year cicadas?
I had successfully rid myself of the memory of the last batch ...

Are you guys sure these things can't take off a limb? I'm talking about the ones that look like Hulk Hogan circa 1985? One buzzed me this past weekend, and it sounded like a Huey gunship. Scared the mess out of me! If they're "fakers", then they're awesome at it!

They are most likely stink bugs.

I always hated those things. Some kids collected them, I never understood it. Disgusting.

I thought they only come out every 17 or so years. Is this the time, because I know back in 2005 they were all over the Silver Springs area.

Yea, they are supposed to be on cycles like that but with all the construction in the area, we have basically upset their dormancy cycles. So, we pretty much have them every year now.

And OMG this thread is making my skin itch... I saw the pictures and it just freaked me out.

There are both annual and periodical cicadas.

I'd imagine that, over the millennia, a cycle perturbation or two occurs now and then, causing a spread of appearances across the years with a peak on the 17 year mark.
