I live in the Fair Lakes area of Fairfax and am considering taking a job near American University. Can anyone tell me how long that commute might be in the morning and afternoon rush hours? Would it be better to take 66 to the Beltway to the Clara Barton Parkway, or to take 123 over the Chain Bridge and go that way? I wouldn't be opposed to using the new toll lanes on the Beltway, so am wondering if that would be the fastest. Thanks in advance!

I can't help you with the Fair Lakes to Tysons part, but it is much better (in the morning) to take Clara Barton through Glen Echo and up Massachussets Ave. In the evening, I find it better to take Chain Bridge and 123. Just make sure you listen to the traffic report.....

I'll fill in for Fair lakes to Tysons commute.
Your toughest commute is from Fair lakes to Tysons. It takes me around 30 minutes on a good day to reach Beltway from Fair lakes if I leave at 8am. 495N to Clara Barton no problems in the morning. On I-66 if you decide to take the HOT lanes to 495, you can drive on left HOV lanes 1/2 mile earlier and take the left exit to 495. I think that will save you 5-7 minutes.
I would not suggest taking 123 between Fair Lakes and Tysons during peak hours. Its a nightmare.

On another have you considered taking the Metro. There is a Fair Lakes shuttle www.afcea.org/documents/FLShuttle.pdf that takes you to Vienna Metro. Check if your community is eligibe to use the shuttle.
