Hi there- Jut secured a job in Old Town but not quite sure which route is best from the Lowes Island/ Cascades section of Sterling. I don't mind taking toll roads (if it's a good alternative) but I'm nervous about HOV requirements on all other freeways. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wouls say Rt 7 to the Beltway, then take the HOT lanes to Springfield, then the regular Beltway to Rt 1 North. I've never done that in the morning, so I can't give you an estimated time, but it is certainly the most direct.

(The Toll Road might be faster than Rt 7, but you'll spend the time saved just getting over to the Toll Road. It's certainly an option in case there is an accident on 7.)

The only road that restricts usage to HOV is 66, inside the beltway, and there is no reason to get on that road for your particular journey.

One way: 40-45 mins assuming NO traffic, be it toll road > 495 or Rte 7 > 495. Rush hour it can take well over an hour and 15, or so.

One of my former coworkers did this commute and absolutely hated it

See, that should've been your initial post. Some useful info for the OP. What kind of commute will wear someone out is completely subjective and depends on each person. Plenty of people handle 1 hr commutes just fine.

Lets just say my initial post was meant to keep things in a nutshell?

People might handle long commutes for a variety of reasons (to live in a nice big house in a suburban setting, good schools for the kids and other family-related factors) but it does not mean that a long distance commute does not take a toll on the travelers, much more so in this area.

Is your office anywhere near a metro station? You could take the commuter bus to West Falls Church station, and then take the train in. Might take a little more time, but would be much less stress on you. The bus stop is in front of the Food Lion at Algonkian Pkway and Lowes Island Blvd, and there is parking for commuter cars. Many people also walk to the bus stop--it's pretty easy to get to it from any house in Lowes Island.

Agreed but what the toll is varies from person to person. Someone may be more than willing to put up with a long commute for awhile for various reasons. Other people may not. Just telling someone 'move, you'll hate the commute' without even telling them the details of said commute isn't being very helpful. Yet it seems like half the posts in threads like these are of that nature.
