Fairfax Schools Vacancy List 2013-14 (job openings, middle schools, income)

It seems longer than last year's, but I'm not sure. As usual, most of the listed openings are at low-income schools with high turnover, but this year I think I see more names of schools that don't appear so regularly on the list. Still, the schools with the most openings posted are the same every year. Applicants should remember that many schools will have openings even though they are not yet posted on the list.

Some surprises in the subject categories - languages are apparently in vogue again. Lots of openings for Chinese teachers. There have always been a few, but there are lots this year. Also, a couple of German and Japanese positions, a page of Spanish, and a good number of Latin.

The usual K-6 jobs are there, and of course, LD in demand, and there is a large number of additional job openings for "multiple disabilities," which seems to mean autism, but I'm not sure.

ESOL is also in demand, but most of the schools with openings are the same ones that always have openings. Some of these schools seem never to fill positions.

Also, a surprising number of music openings, although many are part time.

I know that several middle schools are implementing IBMYP this fall, so the increased demand for middle school language teachers could be coming from that.

I know my school is still looking for a couple science teachers and I don't see those openings posted...so for those looking for jobs, I'd still contact schools you're interested in, even if you don't see it listed.

When I was teaching in Fairfax our school always had openings but almost none of them were ever posted. Sometimes they'd appear just before the beginning of the new school year, but I think at point the principal was getting desperate. I would always recommend applying to where you want to work instead of just where a vacancy is posted.
