My husband and I are looking to buy our first home. However we don't know where to look exactly. My in laws and my husbands job in in the tysons area in VA but I work in Rockville MD. Where would be a good middle ground? I am not familiar with VA except for the tysons area.
Our budget is modest, about $400k.
Thanks

Lots of variables that need to be addressed, but I'd say River Road in Bethesda would be a good middle ground.

All depends on your budget... Bethesda/Potomac area would be good location-wise if it works for your price range.

We have looked in that area but it is a little out of our price range. I need something in the $400k range that can fit a family of 4. Our money does not go far in that area. Unless we win the lottery!!

Tysons area. It really is not that far of a drive to Rockville Maryland from Tysons. Having grown up in Maryland and live in Fairfax I can assure you your taxes overall are lower in Va and your insurance costs too and the drive without traffic is 20 minutes give or take?

You can look around Marshall High School area in Falls Church. I used to live near there and commute to Rockville - it wasn't too bad. There's a neighborhood called Pimmet Hills that is located well that might have homes in your price range. It's sort of an up-and-coming neighborhood that feeds to decent schools and is in a good, central location.

I would live in Virginia. One of you will be commuting over the Legion Bridge, and in the evening it's typically much better going from MD to VA than the other way. I'm assuming having the in-laws closer would be a positive too.

Anything close to $400K in Pimmit Hills now is going to be barely habitable and likely marketed as a teardown. Prices there have gone up quite a bit in anticipation of the Silver Line. You could get a 2-bedroom condo near Tysons for that amount, but even that could take a while to find.

I'd rent near Tysons and try to save for a nicer house to buy in a few years. In between Tysons and Rockville (the "middle ground") are some of the most expensive areas in the DC region.

Why not get a buyer's agent first, they will probably answer all your questions and give you good suggestions. at the same time, work with a mortgage broker to see exactly how much you can afford.
