The ambiguity was not lost on me. I figured it would help bring eyeballs and helpful responses to the thread.

If anyone wants to smoke some grade-A wild violet, you know where to find me.

When I saw the title of this thread I thought it belonged in the Colorado forum.

I was certain you did it that way deliberately.

Yep, those are definitely wild violets. They're quite nice when they bloom, usually around mid-April, but they seed like mad and will soon be everywhere. I let a few of the mature violets stay but pull out all the seedlings to keep them under control. I also see in your second photo that you have wild strawberries. Another plant to keep an eye on lest they too take over everything.

At least I didn't see any bamboo!

Yeah, we have a regular petting zoo (or should I say "petting hort"?) of invasive plants--sans the bamboo. Actually, bamboo would be great to block the view of the slobs next door; we have some hibiscus for that, but come wintertime, they lose their leaves.

I've often wondered which plant would win if you pitted bamboo against English Ivy.

My plan this fall is to rent a sod cutter and remove our carpet of clover/strawberry/crabgrass and then spray on some of that hydromulch stuff. Having laid sod before, this should be a lot easier.

If you really are going to go to this trouble, you might want to consider zoysia grass, if your neighbors don't mind and you don't mind the browning in winter. The stuff is very good at withstanding weed encroachment. It also looks beautiful in the summer and requires less care than other types of grass.

I've often thought of zoysia! I don't care about the browning, and the ease of care, weed resistance, and lushness have great appeal for me. But I've read you have to install it in plugs--so that (I assume) there would be dirt patches between the plugs for some time. That part gives me pause.

Yep, look like wood violets to me. Wild violets are aggressive and getting rid of them is a pain.

How to Get Rid of Wild Violets

But, these were regarded as really useful in colonial times.

Wild Violets Are Edible & Medicinal - Blind Pig & The Acorn

Wood Sorrel is also prolific in NoVA and has heart-shaped leaves. It's an edible weed. Good eatin'. Pleasant lemony taste if you are into lemon. Be careful of oxalic acid if prone to kidney stones, gout, or rheumatism.
