I've been offered a short term (6 mo - 1 year) assignment in the Ft Belvoir area for next spring. Anyone know of a SAFE, pet friendly (dog, <15 lbs) apartment complex in the area that will offer short term leases. If I can find a furnished apartment that's all the better...

Basically, I need a clean place that where I can feel safe walking the dog at 9 p.m.

I've been looking in Kingstowne and Lorton for the most part, but would appreciate any and all advice.

Have you looked in Craig's List? We have found our furnished, short-term rentals that allow dogs there. Good luck.

I could be wrong but I think Lorton will be quite a hike for you to Belvoir. The Kinsgtowne/Island Creek area would be a much easy trip for you.

I think Fort Belvoir maintains a listing of area rentals available to military families. Some people prefer to rent to military families because they are considered mature and responsible; others are military families renting their own places out while they are on assignment elsewhere. I'm sorry I don't know the specifics but you could check through the base.

Kingstown is your best bet. I would stay away from any place south of Belvoir - you'll be in traffic during rush hour everyday (I-95 or Rt. 1). Also look at Alexandria near Eisenhower Ave. There have been a lot of development there (condos, apt, etc.).

I would suggest going to Apartment Showcase.com - Apartments For Rent - Apartment Search in Maryland, Washington DC, Northern Virginia or ApartmentGuide.com - apartments for rent, apartment finder both of these websites will detail lease terms, and if pets are acceptable or not.
