Other than going to a bank (BOA or Wells Fargo), where else would you go to get a good deal on a mortgage?

HomeFirst in Alexandria/Greg Kundinger. He did a fantastic job for us. Beyond responsive and a great rate.

You don't think you can get a better deal/rate online?

Are you working with a Realtor? If so most have lenders that they work with and trust to get you a competitive rate and solid loan. Moderator Cut

I refinanced last year and used Zillow's mortgage lender search. I ended up getting a great rate from a lender out in Kansas with no points (BNC Bank). It's worth trying it, even if you only want something local, cause many lenders in the DC area will match what another lender offers you.

Word of mouth goes a long way IMO, ask friends/coworkers for referrals..

I value local business, as the market around here tends to move fairly quickly. Trying to get an assigned representative from an online company on the phone might be difficult. I even had a recent loan officer cut me off, mid sentence, on our first phone call and tell me she could discuss nothing about my buyers and the proposed property we were interested in. It then required me putting together an email, outlining details of the possible final terms etc, just so my client could forward it to the loan officer for answers. Was annoying for my clients, and (IMO) unnecessarily irritating for me.

Some of the larger online entities seem to have their ducks in a row, with regards to initial response time and follow up, but in respect to getting an offer accepted, I've had no shortage of listing agents speak on how they prefer a local company (all other terms being the same of course).

We recently refinanced our mortgage through NorthWest Federal Credit Union and we were happy with the rate and service.

I did get a bunch of quotes (including WF, where we have accounts and until recently had our mortgage), and Homefirst was very competitive. (It's hard to compare directly, because some use slightly different terms on the GFE. The big negotiable item is title insurance, btw.) He also threw in some lender credits to get the closing costs down. I peppered him with a ridiculous number of questions about the GFE and (later) the HUD-1, and the guy would respond in minutes and in full sentences. (I'm going to cry when all the Baby Boomers retire.)

The one thing I would advise you NOT do is to contact LendingTree. I stupidly did that just to see what quotes we would get. I wanted to get them via e-mail only. (I hate the phone in general.) Within 30 minutes, I had about 20 e-mails from rinky-dink lenders all over the country--and about 10 voicemails. (LT makes you include a phone number even if you don't want to be contacted that way.)

Quicken Loans, however, I've heard decent things about.

We refinanced our rental home with Quicken. I'd endorse.
