We are relocating to Northern Virgina in the next month from San Diego. My husband's job is in Rosslyn. We have a 2 year old and 3 year old and our looking to buy at least 4br 2.5ba and 2000sqft nice house for $650,000 or less. My husband also wants at least 0.25 acre. Where is the best combination of the best schools, family friendly, less than an hour commute??

Welcome to NoVA. Vienna might work well. The closer to the Orange Line metro, and the more updated, the more expensive the house will be.

Arlington county fills the bill on all but price, plus it is close in. Why not consider renting for a while until you can find the best location? Fairfax county also has outstanding schools in many locations, plus there are many more affordable houses on larger lots than in Arlington county. Avoid the city of Alexandria due to high cost and underperforming schools. You may be able to find some houses in that price range in Montgomery County, MD.

I would say Fairfax will be your best option to stay in your budget and give you all that you want. As above posters suggested Arlinton and Vienna both are also great options but housing cost are more expensive in those areas. The further out you are willing to go, the more bang for your buck you will get. Reston and Herndon may be other cities to consider as well.

As it has been suggested, definitely look into Fairfax County (Vienna and Oakton sounds like it will work).

City of Fairfax have quite a few that find the bill at the moment. They would be updated houses from the 1920s-1950s mostly. Some may require a bit of work, but you can find the larger lots there way easier than you can Vienna where the lots with smaller houses are being torn down to make massive craftsman style ones. Check along Chain Bridge and Nutley south of 66.

San Diego....to Northern Va. Do you want to spend more money for less? Do you want to waste hours you could spend with your family sitting in traffic? Any raise you may be potentially getting from this move will be lost in expenses and general quality of living.
