Cost of living is huge vs the Minneapolis area, right now I own a 4br, 3ba, 3000 square food house for about 1800 a month + utils, but we're willing to move back into apartments for the opportunity to live out in DC for a few years, if not permanantly. We also don't need this large of a house to being with, we lived in a 600 square foot 1br condo for 6 years with 2 huskies no problemo.

It'll be me + wife + our newborn. So I am hoping 1-2br for about 1800? No dogs, as we're going to leave them with the wifes parents most likely, unless we get really lucky and can take them.

Is that doable? Any advice on location? I am not super worried about school yet, as we probably move again once we get used to the area ourselves and find what we like.

You should be able to rent a townhouse in Fairfax County if you want a lot of space. If you want proximity to DC then in Arlington are looking at a 1br apartment, maybe a 2br in an older place and/or off the metro.

Check out Tyson's Corner as you have proximity to work and the metro in DC.

awesome, thanks guys! How's the snow in the area? Is parking garage/underground a must? I hate scraping snow off my car, haha. What internet options exist? I currently have fiber via centurylink, so would love to have something pretty solid over there too!

It snows here - but not a lot and usually doesn't stay around long. Not like Minneapolis - I grew up 3 hours north of the cities so I know snow. See link below for details - about 8 days a year with fresh snow and the city pretty much shuts down. The government calls unscheduled leave and unscheduled telework and most companies pretty much follow the feds.

Washington DC Snowfall Totals & Snow Accumulation Averages - Current Results

Internet here is great with multiple options - I'm on Verizon fios.

If you're ok with an older building, check out The Carlton in Arlington - you can get a 2 bedroom for under $1800 (includes all utilities) and can rent garage parking spaces from owners for a monthly rate. The Brittany is across the street - a bit newer building and 2 bedrooms are around $2000.

You might also like Mosaic District. More bang for your buck than Arlington and DC, but you can walk to Dunn Loring Metro station to get into DC quickly and there are lots of new updated units for rent . Mosaic District has movie theater, shops, restaurants, etc. Great place to live.

If you've dealt with Minnesota snow fine the Northern Virginia area will be a breeze. You will have to scrape your car off periodically during the winter but we don't get many big snowstorms. Usually a couple per winter.
