Search for "Chinatown bus" to find numerous options between DC and NYC. The one-way trip takes about five hours and is much safer than traveling by car.

Most express buses will pick up additional passengers in Baltimore before heading to NYC. The different providers differ mainly on the pickup points in DC, Arlington, or even Fairfax County. All providers will arrive into at NYC Penn Station, though a few will also stop in NYC Chinatown as well.

Prices are competitive, especially for roundtrips. If you are certain on your departure time, then you may want to prepaid online, to ensure a seat during holiday peak travel season. Most buses include free Internet access, and several will include a bottle of water as well.

I like Megabus and really enjoy sitting in the front set on the top deck.

Not sure I understand this statement? Why do you say bus travel is safer than can traffic?

I think statistics are kept for different modes of travel...deaths per 100,000 miles or some such. I'm not interested in researching it, but I would bet that statistically, buses are safer than cars. They are very heavy vehicles driven by professional drivers....passengers sit well above the vast majority of other vehicles on the road....it is a violation of Federal law for a bus driver to be fooling with a phone while driving...FMCSA health exams for drivers, etc. Like airplanes, it is big news when one crashes, but they don't crash very often.

The disconcerting thing I have read about the cheapo buses is that they are often leased and sub-leased so many times that it is sometimes difficult to ascertain who the hell owns the bus. This is important if you are injured or killed aboard one....

I think what OP means by safe is an actual bus company (like Mears/Greyhound) that has newer buses, professional drivers, etc. Not some beat up rickety thing full of tourists going to Atlantic City.

Amtrak also runs trains daily between DC and New York. Much more spacious.

My son took Boltbus to NYC from DC. My DD and friends have done Megabus. All were pleased with the experience.

I know a bunch of FCPS bus drivers that drive Chinatown buses on weekends and all summer. Makes sense I guess since they already have the CDL-B with passenger/air brake endorsements and a DOT card. Their biggest gripe is waiting around in NYC and getting hassled by NYPD.

I wouldn't do it for all the tea in China!
