My husband is going to be stationed at the Navy Yard this spring. We have two small children and will be in the area 1.5 years. We'd really like for my husband to have as short a commute as possible, given that this is a fairly short tour. Since my daughter will not yet be in grade school, and we're okay with sending her to private pre-K/K, I'm okay with not being in the Fairfax school district. We're planning to rent and looking for something less than $3000/mo.

So...what are some good options? Are there safe neighborhoods in Alexandria with families with small children? I've heard some about the Braddock Heights area. What would the drive be like from there to the Navy Yard, leaving ~5:30am and returning around 6pm? Would it make more sense to take the metro from here?

Also, what about Arlington? Which pockets should we look at, or perhaps more importantly, which should we avoid? Is the commute any easier from here than it is from Alexandria?

Thanks for any suggestions!
