Former resident of South Arlington here (Crystal City). Curious about the airplane noise in Cherrydale. I know it's probably bad -- but HOW bad?

Are airplanes going to be waking you up at 5 am? 10 pm?

Are they going to be so audible indoors in a brick house as to affect normal conversations or TV watching?

What about when outdoors? So loud as to affect normal conversations?

What about frequency? Are we talking perpetual, every 5 minutes sort of noise? Noise that you notice a few times per hour? Per day?

Any input from Cherrydale residents (or residents of other nearby neighborhoods) greatly appreciated! Particularly if anybody could compare airplane noise in Cherrydale to airplane noise in Crystal City, which I'm familiar with.

Work in Crystal City and live in between Ballston and Westover. I don’t notice a lot of jet noise and when a plane fly’s over it is not loud enough to disturb something. FWIW, I fly in and out of Reagan often and I don’t usually see my neighborhood in their flight path.

I think you should be fine in Cherrydale. We live in Courthouse and is often not noticeable. I think the parts of Arlington that get the most noise tend to be on the other side of Lee Highway towards the Parkway - essentially Rosslyn and points north to the river.

The airport has noise restrictions so there are few flights after 11 pm and before 6 am. I'm not sure about the times, but something like that.

I would do more research. I saw an article yesterday that in 2020, DCA is moving their flight paths to/from the north closer to Rosslyn, which will mean more noise in Cherrydale. There should be a noise map or noise study that you view online to look at the noise contours. In some cases, airports have to replace residential windows to mitigate noise impacts.

There’s some old noise maps from 2005 on pages 86 thru 88 in the PDF. You can tell where Cherrydale is by looking at the street network where Lee Hwy and Old Dominion Drive intersect. Cherrydale aircraft noise ranges from 51 dB to 57 dB. I live along a section I-66 that doesn’t have a soundwall, which generates about 65 dB at my house per the recent tolling noise study. The road noise is barely audible from inside my house, so I don’t think you would hear any aircraft noise if the levels are 51 dB to 57 dB. That being said, DCA has way more traffic than it did back in 2005 and in 2020 the flight path will move closer to Cherrydale, so that could impact the numbers. I would email Don Buyer’s office for a copy of the noise maps showing it under the proposed 2020 condition.
