Also it was a better tax answer, as I got a huge refund from NY (although in order to get it, I had to send them copies of my VA return. Took 4 months to get my refund!).

Let me add that as a tax professional myself, you should always procure tax advice from a tax professionals for questions like this. Note however, that this is something you can take care of at the time of filing your return and you don't have to pay someone $100's an hour to get good advice on something relatively simple. Most tax preparation services offer such consulting services for a small fee, even Turbo Tax and H&R Block.

Regarding your car, if I remember correctly, when I lived in Fairfax County I actually received a letter indicating that the Fairfax County government knew I was living in VA and requested that I pay my car tax (this is a thing in VA). I was able to do it online. As for getting your DL, as someone indicated, you better get to the DMV early in the morning; it took my wife and I four hours to get our VA DLs! I have never lived any place where it took that long to get a DL. Crazy.
To add/clarify. As I have mentioned, the DMV currently does not take walk ins and you have to schedule an appointment online, with the earliest I found (two weeks ago) being end of March.

The 'vehicle tax' is known as personal property tax which varies by county and the rate can be typically found fairly easily online (county where one resides), but the calculation is a bit weird in my opinion and is of course based off the assessed value of your vehicle, so the more expensive/valuable your vehicle is, the more you will pay altogether. Personal property tax is paid twice a year IIRC. I would adivise checking the website for the county where you intend to reside to get the information and kind of anticipate what to expect. Some folks could give you a ballpark figure on comparable vehicles so you have an idea. I would say give or take 500+/yr easily unless one drives a much older/higher mileage vehicle (there are discounts applied to high mileage vehicles IIRC, which are placed in a different assessment category/class).

Thank you all for your posts. Today marks the end of a 5 day trip to my new office and I was able to familiarize myself with the office location, transportation (VRE/Metro) and the HOV lane situation. All new to a Floridian. I looked at areas like Springfield and others near the Franconia station, Lorton, and other areas where my coworkers live. So much to digest. Looks like I'll be looking to live with a roommate first while I decide. I'll be here 3 or 4 years so keeping my Florida residency will be difficult although we will keep our homestead since the rest of the family will sta#D1D1E1and will not register to vote in VA. Looks like I'll be commuting often. Thanks again for all the posts.

May be too late but VA schools are better than FL. Especially NOVA
Schools

I believe that's an outdated myth. NOVA schools used to be good, but wait until the latest testing scores are public.

Well I guess I wasn't too specific. My kids are adults. One is a full time student and the other has full time job. School districts are not a concern. Thank you for the heads up though. Looks like for now I will settle for being somebody's roommate. I'll look at selling my home in FL when the oldest graduates/move out. From what I have read, it is not going to be easy to maintain two households, almost impossible.

If you are a federal employee and want the COLA that comes with living in DC you will have to claim VA residency and file all the taxes etc. If your spouse doesn't work, not a big issue as Florida doesn't have an income tax.

I did the FL to Va back to FL thing. I kept my VA job just went remote, but got a raise when I moved back to FL, due to not paying VA taxes.

But do talk to a VA tax person.

Also that area is good, lived in Kingstowne and it was great.
