Hello,
We have just moved to Virginia and want to know if a written and/or driving test is required to obtain a Virginia Driver's License. We are coming from Washington State where we just exchanged our out of state license for a Washington State license. It was nice not to have to take a test!
Thanks in advance!

When we moved here from PA, we did not have to take any tests....well, just an eye test. That was about 7 years ago.

I didn't have to take a test over a year ago, but it was a pain to prove I was me, I live where I say I lived and then I had to trace my name going back to my birthname. Good lordy!!

Welcome to NOVA. We relocated to the area from WA last year and were only required to take an eye exam to get our driver's license (assuming you meet their requirement for proof of legal presence and VA residency).

here's the website for the Virginia DMV. DMVnow.com

The bad thing about Nova is we have vehicle property tax. Also have emissions every 2 years as well.

Two questions. First, what are emissions? Second, I am moving to Virginia soon and will need to get a license and I also need to get my eyes checked because I've realized I probably need glasses. I won't have gone to the eye doctor yet when I take the eye exam at the DMV so I wondered what happens if you don't pass the exam at the DMV? Do they just have a restriction or what?

When we moved from NJ two years ago we did not have to take an eye test.

strange, because I had to take the eye test. Here's a link to the vision screening policy:

The vehicle needs to be inspected by your local gas station. I forget if it's every year or every two years. (What makes it even more frustrating is that you don't get a reminder. You have to remember to do this on your own.) You get a sticker after the inspection. It's a total rip off, just a way for the state to make money. However, make sure you stay current on this! We learned the hard way that you get a very expensive ticket if your sticker has expired.
