I saw somewhere that licensed massage therapist in DC make $70k a year. I'm a single mother of a 10 year old. Do you think we can make it on that range of income in NOVA?

Yes, I think so as long as your expenses and expectations are reasonable. You wouldn't be buying a SFH for example and it would be easier if you weren't working in DC.

I'm sure I can't afford Arlington. Do you think I could afford Alexandria? I have a car that's paid off. I'd prefer a town home or condo anyway.

$70K gross? You might be able to afford rent, utilities and food. I doubt you could buy a home in the DC metro area with that income.

2 bedroom rentals in Alexandria will run about $1500 a month. Arlington has a few listings in that range.

You won't be buying any decent property with that income and a child, but you won't have any issues renting a nice place, even in Arlington.

I don't know where you read that, but I'd be astounded if any massage therapist anywhere makes that kind of money, other than (guessing) maybe a handful in LA with Hollywood clientele. I've never met anyone here who gets massages, and the masseuses I see are at the airport making an hourly wage.

I know many people who get therapeutic massages and spa massages on a regular basis for themselves and sometimes their kids (and pets). The number does seem high to me but there is a wide range between airport chair massages by the minute to Massage Envy style places to the Thai massage establishments to therapeutic massage for sports and occupational injuries.

Are you sure about that?? I know two of them and they are making nowhere near that. In fact, one is planning to quit to take an office job, saying massage therapy didn't offer benefits and was not reliable. It's only two people, but you should make sure you can really make that before you make any decisions.

It depends on where you work and how good you are. Massage Envy and a lot of other places offer benefits. And if you have a full time clientele (which I'm still working on) there's no reason a massage therapist can't make $50k in Richmond. There's a formula to it. $20 base pay per hour massage + extra $2 per request + extra $2-$5 per add on service + extra $10 per added 1/2 hour + tip. If you see 40 clients a week life is good. Plus I believe in DMV it's a lot more because services cost more. Now if people aren't into massages in DMV that's something else ( I doubt that due to the number of spas in the DC area although there are few in NOVA).
