Hey gang, I'll be moving out to NOVA at the beginning of October for a new job. I was wondering what are local sales and income taxes like? I'm single, no kids, and will be renting an apartment. How much of my monthly $4,597 could I expect to pay on income tax?

I'm also considering what to do with my car. I'm moving from California and I'm not sure how practical it would be to ship my car over. It's paid for though, so I consider it an asset, and it would be useful to have.

Thanks a bunch.

Virginia's income tax is graduated. Anything over 17k per year is taxed at 5.75% Below that is 2% (below 3k) 3% (below 5K) and 5% (up to 17 k).

So, you can figure paying an average of 5.5% or so on income tax.

The sales tax is 5% for msot items. Cars are like 3.5 or 4 % and food is like 2.5% or something like that. There governor is trying to raise the sales tax an additional 1% for Nothern Virginia.

You also pay "personal property tax" based upon the value of your car.

It's no big deal to transport a car from CA. Call around, I checked a few years ago an it was about $750. Gas was a lot cheaper than, so I don't know what it is now.

Back then it probably wasn't a big deal. However, I just checked on that a month ago because I'm moving from CA to VA next week. The cheapest quote was $1250 for an enclosed and $900 or so for open transport. Depending on the car, I wouldn't suggest open transport. You can't guarantee that the car over yours won't leak oil all over it.

Inland Empire. I really don't trust my car driving 3,000 miles across country. It's 10 years old and only has 66,000 miles on it, but it's never had a major service done on it and I can't afford to pay for one at the moment. But I might look into having it transported over. I figure the cost would be about the same as renting a car for a month, and a whole lot cheaper than buying another used car.
