We are looking at places to live in Arlington and found a great neighborhood next to Rosslyn called Highlands. My question is; how bad is the noise from planes landing and taking off from Reagan National?

Any concerns about this part of town? Also, is this area good for kids? If not, where would you recommend that's kid friendly but still in "the city"?

Thanks!

NOVA is a savage border area where the savages of D.C. mix with the yuppy trash of Ashburn and there-abouts.

There is no where kid friendly within 100 miles of D.C.

Pack up your kids and move to New Zealand.

Jet noise is an issue in Rosslyn, sometimes to the point where you have to stop conversing as planes pass overhead (if you're outside). When planes approach DCA from the west, they roughly follow a path down the Potomac and then cut across Rosslyn towards DCA. It can be pretty annoying if plane noise bothers you. I'm not familiar with the Highlands... it could be more isolated from the flight paths depending on where it is.

Have you considered Courthouse or Clarendon? They are a tad more kid-friendly - especially Clarendon. Sort of depends on the age of the kids I suppose. NOVA in general is a great place to raise children - moreso Fairfax and Loudoun.

If you do not like plane noise, North Arlington could be rough for you. That being said, it is one of the best places to raise kids with good schools and great neighborhoods. Check these areas out:

Yorktown area zip 22207
Clarendon-Courthouse neighborhood (north of Wilson Blvd) zip 22201
Waverly Hills area zip 22207 (Glebe Road on the west, Quincy St on the east and 66 on the south)

Best of luck and you should love Arlington - a true gem!

Highlands is just above Rosslyn/Court House area, between 66 and the GW Parkway. I could be wrong. Anyway, we saw some townhomes there that look great and the schools for that neighborhood also get high rankings.

I'm definitely averse to constant airplane noise, we live under a flight path now.

Glad to get positive feedback from CaseyMac and Claude Henry - thanks!

What's up with Ateo? New Zealand? Sure, living on a great big island with a bunch of sheep might be safer but I'd rather take my chances with the latte drinking, SUV driving, whole foods shopping savages roaming the streets of Northern Virginia. At least they probably know where to get good Thai food.
