Hello fellow NE transplants, Have any of you found new england style Chinese food? I am looking for the pupu platter specifically(butterfly fried shrimp egg rolls, teriyaki sticks, pork ribs/strips, chicken wings, breaded and fried chicken, and of course Duck Sauce).

Yes I know its not authentic chinese food but I have been eating this style since I was a kid. Thanks!!!

I was used to similar fare growing up in NJ, and haven't quite found anything comparable here yet.

I have one place to tell you not to go to-Tau Tau's in West Springfield-this dump is roach infested. I hate to rag on a place, but avoid this one.

I've heard Peking Gourmet Inn in Falls Church is good. Never been there, so can't say for sure first hand. The only food I've ever heard of "New England" style is clam chowder, so I can't tell you if this place is what you're looking for.

I've been to Peking Gourmet before and it is pretty good, with a long reputation for good food. I don't live near there so I don't really get there now, but my boss goes and apparently they are famous for their duck. So that might be one place others would recommend too. I think they've got pictures of famous people who have been there, presidents maybe too.

There is no such thing as New England style Chinese Food.

There is, however, a style of Chinese Food called Good Chinese Food.

You can find it at Mark's Duck House.

Haha, there kind of is such a thing . . .

I grew up in Vermont and while now even my little town is fairly cosmopolitan, in the 70s/80s when ethnic restaurants were just making their way up there, a lot of them would advertise "Chinese Food for the New England Palate" or something like that, meaning essentially less spicy, more breaded, etc. (like traditional bland N.E. cuisine).

It is not authentic, but it is the only Chinese food I had until I moved to an urban area (and discovered I like Chinese food . . . ) Can understand why it would be a comfort food for some.

I would not know how to find it down here, though, aside from possibly looking at a menu and seeing the extinct-most-places pupu platter.

Holy cow! I can't answer your question, but it sure brings back some memories. I know exactly the kind of food you mean! I had no idea it was a New England thing, but I've since lived in Texas, Maryland, Virginia, and Nebraska - and none of these places had that kind of Chinese food. Too funny.

I would try Rockville and Bethesda in Md. I understand there are Kosher Chinese restaurants as there's an established Jewish and Chinese community there. Here's an example.
