Yes, that's what they had out for public comment. Yesterday's markup made the changes (some significant) which will be made official next week.

More positions are being cut from Parks and Libraries in the Fairfax County Budget (FY2010) than almost every other department combined.

Aaah...I see.

Although, I see an increase of about $5M for both fire & police departments. Some cuts include cuts for take home vehicles, and overtime pay. I don't see any cuts to parks/rec/libraries, aside for the reductions in hours -

In addition, the Library Board has approved a revised proposal for
library hours for both Community and Regional Libraries. As a
result Community Libraries will not close on Fridays. Reductions
in evening hours at both Community and Regional Libraries will
result in the same schedules for both Monday through Saturday.
The schedule for Monday through Wednesday is 10-8, Thursday
and Friday is 10-6 and Saturday is 10-5. As per current
scheduling only Regional Libraries will be open on Sundays,
however their hours of operation will be reduced by two hours
(one hour later opening and one hour earlier close) and be open
from 1 - 5.

What's also sad is that when people are out of work, libraries are a place to go. Not just to use the internet, but to read magazines and books, check the public announcements, or simply to have a place to go.

Also, so many important community groups meet at the library. My library has a number of community meeting rooms that are always booked. It used to be I had to reserve a room two months in advance. When they cut hours, I can't imagine how long the wait will be.

These hard times will pass, hope it will be sooner rather than later.

Default Non-emergency phone numbers

" Now, what would happen if instead of a car accident I had called 911 to report someone wielding a gun at the nearby Wal-Mart?! "

You may not be able to get through 911 or there may not be any emergency personnel available since people call them for non-emergent reasons like a fender-bender. 911 is for emergencies and emergencies only. A potential insurance issue does not come close to constituting a medical or life-threatening emergency. If no one is hurt in a vehicular accident call the police station not 911. It is huge waste of time, resources and taxpayer money to use 911 inappropriately. Put the local police # on your cell phone. For non-emergency situations in Fairfax County, dial 703-691-2131.
