Is this area dangerous for a young female alone at night, on a bike?

a lot safer than Springfield Plaza. FCPD sub-station is only a couple of hundred yards away.

Yeah, anyplace near the Springfield Mall is bad news. Candy City (inside the Springfield Mall proper) rocks - actually, it used to be a lot better, with a lot of imported and unusual candies - but the whole place is pretty damn creepy and I'd be happy never to go there again.

Does any of the bad news central Springfield 'scene' leak over into West Springfield, i.e., around the Old Keene Mill mall?

This is near where we live. It's pretty safe, with the Fairfax County Police Dept. and fire station just south of West Springfield H.S.

Cool! Do you happen to know if the "Springfield Town Center" project (the revitalization of the Springfield Mall, I guess) would involve moving the Whole Foods out of the Old Keene Mill mall? I've seen mention of a Whole Foods going in there, which strikes me as odd given that there's one so close.

In my opinion, a young female shouldn't bike alone at night. I'm pretty independant and I wouldn't do it.

Drivers won't be able to see a biker as well at night and a young female by herself at night might be more at risk of having her bike taken or being harmed.

I think that is a very safe area but I dont think a young female should bike alone either - unless she is carrying a piece.

Springfield has never been very bike friendly. Most of it does have nice sidewalks, though. I think you would be a lot more likely to get run over on your bike getting out of that shopping center, than being assaulted. That is a very well established community, classic Fairfax County. Are you looking at Cardinal Forest?

I think the area is pretty safe, but I would be concerned for your safety on a bike at night. I don't find the streets are well lit and a lot of people go 45-50 on Old Keene Mill Rd (definitely above speed limit). I would be concerned of someone hitting you on the road.

Yeah, Cardinal Forest looks great! I'm on their web site now. Thanks for pointing it out!
