Those beautiful photos of Reston have put in the mood for looking at autumn leaves. What are some of the best places around Nova for leaf viewing? I'd love to hear about nearby places, not just than the Shenandoahs (even though the mountains are gorgeous).

To start the ball rolling, I love walking around the the various lakes in Reston. Lake Fairfax has some spectacular leaves, too.

ps. Ooops, thread title should say withOUT driving very far!

I can't wait to drive Georgetown Pike between Reston and Langley in a couple of weeks. I'm sure it will be a brilliant, vivid, and vivacious feast to the eyes of reds, oranges, and yellows!

Meadowlark Gardens. Also, Tarara Winery.

where exactly is Georgetown Pike, I see Old Georgetown Pike as being a scenic byway. Where would you get on?

It is also known as Route 193. It juts off of Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) in the North McLean/Langley area about two miles before you hit DC and runs all the way to Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) in the Reston area. It is a narrow and VERY windy and hilly two-lane road that goes through some of the most gorgeous scenery I've ever seen in Virginia (minus the McMansions ruining the view in some spots).

Add Barrel Oak Winery to that list. I was just there Saturday with colleagues and friends, and the views were amazing. Naked Mountain (and the road leading up to it from I-66) in the Markham area between Manassas and Front Royal is nice as well. We also had some great pizza at Matterelli (spelling?) Winery, which was a smaller family-run venue way out in the boonies nearer to Warrenton. Gorgeous scenery here as well.

thanks ScranBarre...it's sounds awesome but I'm real scared of driving those types of roads. I'll have to see if I can get my courage up.

Martarella (sp?? also, not sure) has great pizza and food, I love the brick oven that they have.

If you like wineries and sampling, another fun winery that's a few minutes off 66 (exit 23-ish) is Vintage Ridge. They have a beautiful barn style sampling room and an awesome food pairing with the samples. You get a platter of cheeses, chutneys and nuts, and then a dessert platter to sample with each of their wines. It's all pretty tasty snacks and it's fun to try it with the different wines. Their winery is very pretty as well, it's been one of my favorite atmospheres and samplings out of the VA wineries in this area.

I haven't done it but heard on NPR last week that Prince William Forest Park is a good place for hiking, biking, and autumn leave viewing.
