If you don't they get the courts to issue a judgement against you, which messes up your credit for a long time. I was in DC civil court on another matter and it seemed like all the other cases were exactly this.
That may be true. But emergency rooms can't refuse service (what other company would serve a client who is known to not pay his bills?) and second, for chronic deadbeats, it's not that hard to avoid a lawsuit. (That's why the companies hire skip tracers.)

For as much as a judgement hurts, remember, the deadbeat already has a collection item on his/her credit report anyway, which sticks around for seven years. (The judgement hangs around for 10, but from years 8-10, I'm not sure it has a huge impact presuming the rest of the record is clean.)

Finally, getting sued is one thing, paying it is another. It can be darn hard to collect from a deadbeat.

If I get insurance for my parents, it won't be a secret. I'll have to let them know assuming they'll have to get some kind of physical anyway. I'm not even sure if its worth getting a cheap insurance for them because some of these policies seem like they'd consider almost anything a "pre existing condition". It seems stupid to me.

I don't know. It seems like in the short term, it would just be easier for them to be insurance free. And in the long term, pray for a miracle. Maybe public option will be available with decent coverage.

They can't go to work for a company that offers it? Are they not here legally perhaps?

It's tough when they speak broken english at best and no college degree. Nobody wants to hire someone who's in their 50s also. They worked at cleaners and warehouses all their lives.

And yes, I see your sarcasm.

No sarcasm was intended. Around here that's not an unusual situation.
