A little late for this now, but...my husband and I made an offer on a house in this area. It wasn't the school pyramid that I wanted (Yorktown), but the elementary school is good (Ashlawn), the middle school is Kenmore and the HS is Washington Lee. The house was what we wanted for a price that was in our budget, which was the deciding factor, along with the schools weren't "terrible". Any opinions on this area? Any place that we should avoid? Is it generally safe? Thanks in advance!

Congratulations! The Bon Air/Bluemont neighborhoods are wonderful areas in Arlington! I work near there (Ballston) and take my kids to Bon Air park frequently on the weekends so we can ride bikes on the W&OD trail. You have picked a great neighborhood.

Ashlawn is a really nice little neighborhood school. I'd send my kids there if I could afford Arlington.

We have lived in this area for a while and don't have any complaints.
Most people who live here have pretty short commutes, it is about a 20 minute drive to downtown DC, so people are able to have more time with families. Also most of the houses are 1/2 to 3/4 mile walk to Ballston metro, if you don't want to drive. No one who lives in this area really has to deal with bad traffic, unless they drive for their job.
There is a Bon-Air neighborhood "google group" if you are in that area. If you want your kids in the Arlington Forest Tennis/Swim club sign up as soon as you move in as there is a three year wait. It is a small club, but people really love it.
We have a small child, so we talk to people about the schools, people love Ashlawn , you can also apply to Arlington Traditional if you want a magnet school . I don't know any kids in Kenmore, I see them walking to school from the neighborhood, it is pretty close. They just renovated the school a few years ago. Also, they just spent $110 million on fixing up Washington-Lee so facilities are brand new. The bus rides to the schools are all pretty short. As for safety , I know someone had a GPS unit stolen from their car a few months back, other than that, I have not heard anything. All in all, most of North Arlington is pretty similar in terms of day to day life.

Bon Air/Bluemont is great! So close to everything you could ever need while in such a nice, tranquil parklike setting. Good luck on the offer!

Don't you guys who've purchased homes in this area mind that Wilson Blvd. west of Glebe looks kind of, oh, I don't know, yucky? You know, a relatively large amount of litter (I mean, for a neighborhood in this price range.. not DC inner-suburbia generally.. heh), empty commercial lots with rusting metal... things.. and 'gravel gardens,' dandelions sprouting through sidewalk cracks, ill-maintained homes, etc.? I walked down Wilson towards Seven Corners about a week ago and was surprised at how down-at-the-heels the area looked (I don't know about your individual residential streets, as I didn't explore off of Wilson), considering its costliness.
