I've recently moved into a home, and I would like to do some renovations and remodeling. Here is what needs to be done:

1. Kitchen: replacement of cabinets and countertops

2. Master bathroom renovation

3. Basement: needs finishing. Just something simple -- no new bedrooms, bathrooms, or wet bar. It needs lighting and walls.

I've never done any remodeling before. Where is the best place to start? Any recommendations? Do I hire a general contractor for all three projects? What about these kitchen/bath showrooms I see around town?

Thanks for all your help!

Try posting on the "House" Forum. You should get some replies over there. Good luck on your projects!

Well, if you pose this exact question over on the House Forum . . .

. . . you'll get people who can respond in a variety of ways. Many of them are contractors, home builders, DIYers, and some are historic homeowners doing restoration.

However, if you are looking for specific recommendations for contractors, services, and materials in the NoVA area, then ask for that on the NoVA Forum.

Yes, I am looking for recommendations for contractors, services, and materials in NoVA, which is why I am posting here instead of the House forum.

Thanks!

Thanks so much for this recommendation. I looked at their website, and it looks exactly like what I'm looking for, since I'm looking to do my basement, kitchen and bathrooms!

Can you tell me a little about how the process worked, and what you liked and disliked about working with this company? Feel free to PM me if you want.

Thanks!

For your kitchen counters, I can recommend Dominion Granite, based in Ashburn:
Dominion Granite and Marble | Northern Virginia and DC's premier fabricator | Specializing in countertops, vanities, fireplaces, and remnant stone

We had several quotes, and they were significantly lower; however, their customer service and work quality was impeccable. They did a fantastic job on our granite countertops, and the money we saved allowed us to upgrade several color levels in our granite.
